SAN JOSE SEMICONDUCTOR COMPANY
DESCRIPTION
In early 2007, a San Jose, CA-based semiconductor company was looking for a Web applications development and consulting partner. They have Web applications, both Internet and Intranet, running on ColdFusion. They wanted to initially enhance the searchability of the sites and eventually redesign the site architecture to make it more user-friendly, scalable and easier to maintain. They engaged JWay to work on the search project and were quite pleased that they engaged the team further in implementing an enhancement on both the public and internal sites. This saw the beginning of an ongoing Managed Service relationship for Web application development and maintenance.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The objectives of Managed Service for the Web Application Development and Maintenance engagement were as follows:
- To provide a cost-effective ongoing day-to-day operational support to ensure the client’s Internet site and the internal administration tool are functional and address any issues the users may raise in a timely manner
- To perform site enhancements that support the client’s continuous efforts to redesign and improve the site architecture, user interface, and application design and functionality making the site more robust yet straightforward to maintain and manage
- To resolve application issues or bugs as they arise post-implementation of any enhancements or functionality improvements
- To manage the overall Managed Service budget through regular budget utilization reports
JWay’ SOLUTION
To fulfill the project objectives, JWay accomplished the following:
- Set up a team of Web application engineers with expertise in Web, ColdFusion, site architecture, database design and administration and a Web applications project manager to interface with the client eBusiness marketing and technical team on a daily basis.
- Introduced processes to reduce the turnaround time for issue resolution, incorporating a Manila-based application development team. The JWay team, composed of both onshore resources based in San Jose, CA and offshore resources based in Manila, Philippines, provided the needed coverage to respond to issues in a timely fashion.
- Performed thorough review and analysis of requirements to provide designs which are scalable and easy to maintain.
- Implemented incremental review processes for major enhancements to get client’s feedback in the earlier phase of the project and, thus, minimize rework.
- Conducted regular status meetings and adopted proven project management discipline, closely monitoring team activities, to meet the client’s timeline and project budget.
RESULTS
Since the start of JWay’s engagement with the client in 2007, JWay’s Web applications development and maintenance team has successfully performed numerous feature enhancements to the client’s Internet and Intranet applications. Recently, JWay was also tasked to help prepare marketing requirements specifications to further improve the products administration portion of the site and application. The small successes in this Managed Service deal may be attributed not only to JWay’s technical capability but also to the smooth interaction and communication between the client and JWay paved by established and proven project management processes and methodology. The solution that JWay has put together, incorporating a Manila-based application development team, has been quite beneficial to the client both from a cost-effectiveness and turnaround time perspective.
